Crewel work is an ancient art form thought to date back around one thousand years. The beautiful free embroidery was probably most famously used in the Bayeux Tapestry and reached the height of its popularity in the 17th Century. Traditionally created using wool to embroidered on a linen or cotton background, nowadays a variety of back cloths have been used from silks to velvet.
