Sewing Thimbles

The first thimble is thought to have been made by the Romans out of bronze. It was found in Pompeii and is thought to date back to the 1st century AD. Since then thimbles have been produced in a variety of materials from leather to bone and even diamond! Queen Elizabeth the first is even said to have given her lady in waiting a thimble set with semi precious stones. Throughout the years thimbles have been used not only as a sewing aid but also as spirit measures, love tokens and were collected in the war and melted down to help pay for hospital equipment. It seems unsurprising then that they are such a collectors item as well as an essential piece of any sewing kit today.
