Fitted bodices and tailored pieces hold their shape better in structured wovens, so check the pattern's recommended weight before choosing. Patterns with stretch panels or close-fitting seams need genuine stretch fabric — jersey & stretch is designed for this, plain cotton isn't. Structured outerwear patterns suit wool & coating fabric for warmth and shape retention, while costume or bag patterns needing rigidity work well in denim & heavy fabric or faux leather. How much fabric do I need to make a dress?

Most dresses need 2-4 metres of fabric, depending on the size, style and whether the design includes sleeves, a full skirt or pattern matching. Always check the
meterage recommendation on your sewing pattern, and buy a little extra to allow
for cutting mistakes or pattern repeats.

What's the best fabric for a summer dress?

Lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen and viscose are ideal for summer dresses, as they let the skin breathe and drape well in warm weather. Always check your pattern for recommended fabric types and weights as the style of dress affects which fabrics will work best. A bias cut or flowing design needs fabric with good drape, while a fitted bodice needs a fabric with more structure

Can I order a fabric sample before buying dress fabric?

Yes, samples are available so you can check the colour, weight and drape of a fabric
before ordering the full length for your project.

Do I need to pre wash dress fabric before sewing?

Yes, particularly with natural fibres like cotton and linen, which can shrink.
Pre washing your fabric in the same way you plan to wash the finished garment
helps prevent the dress from shrinking or warping after it's made.
